Anna Kendrick started her existence on August 9, 1985. She is an American actress and singer. Anna shot to international fame after her performance as Natalie Keener in the film Up in the Air (2009), for which she received the Academy Awards, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Supporting Actress. She portrayed Dinah Lord in the Broadway production High Society (1998), for which she was nominated for a Tony Award. Her other notable roles include Fritzi Wagner in Camp (2003), Jessica Stanley in The Twilight Saga (2008-11), Stacey Pilgrim in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), Beca Mitchell in Pitch Perfect (2012), and Janet in End of Watch (2012).
She was born in Portland, Maine, the daughter of William K and Janice Kendrick. Her descent is Scottish, English, and Irish. She has an older brother, actor Michael Cooke Kendrick, who appeared in the 2000 production Looking for an Echo. Anna attended Deering High School in Portland, Maine.
Kendrick began her performing career at the age of 10 when she took a bus from Portland, Maine, to New York City where she could try out for roles. Her initial role was as Dinah in the Broadway musical High Society in August 1998 when she was only 12 years old, a performance for which she was awarded the Theatre World Award. She was also nominated for a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award. The Tony Award nomination made her the third-youngest Tony Award nominee ever. Anna went on to perform in a number of other productions, including the musical A Little Night Music, playing Fredrika Armfeldt in the New York City Opera production. Afterwards, she made her film debut in the 2003 comedy musical Camp. For her portrayal of Fritzi Wagner in this film, she was nominated for the Independent Spirit Awards Best Debut Performance.
In 2007, she had a role in the film Rocket Science, in which she portrayed Ginny Ryerson, a fast-talking high school debater. Although Kendrick said she found the part challenging and intimidating after watching an actual national collegiate debate, her performance was praised by critics and she was nominated for an Independent Spirit award for Best Supporting Actress. Later that year, Anna tried out for the role of Jessica Stanley in Twilight, a 2008 film based on the first book of the series by Stephenie Meyer. Anna had intended to do a mix-and-match audition with various actors, but she was too sick and had to leave prematurely. Fortunately for her, she was brought in for a later session where she won the role of Jessica. Kendrick reprised this role in the first three Twilight sequels.
Kendrick's singing experience in theater won her the opportunity to land a role in The Marc Pease Experience (2009), where she appears as a high school senior involved in musical theater. She also appeared in the 2009 film Elsewhere, in which she portrays her first lead character, a girl whose best friend goes missing. She also appeared in Up in the Air, based on Walter Kirn's 2001 novel of the same name. For her performance in Up in the Air, she won Best Suporting Actress with the National Board of Review, and she also garnered nominations from numerous other awards including The Screen Actors Guild, The Golden Globes, and the Academy Awards.
She reprised her performance as Jessica Stanley in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. She appeared in Edgar Wright's rendition of the graphic novel Scott Pilgrim, titled Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. In this film, she played Stacey Pilgrim, the sister of the lead character. In 2010, she was in LCD Soundsystem's video "Pow Pow" as a "shape-shifter" who gathers "the souls of wicked men". In October 2010, she attended the 2010 Top Glamour Awards based in Mexico where she was given the award for "Best International Actress".
In 2011, Anna starred in the dramatic comedy 50/50, and reprised her her portrayal of Jessica Stanley in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. In 2012, she was Rosie in the film version of the baby book What to Expect When You're Expecting. She also voiced the character Courtney in the animated movie ParaNorman. She starred in Pitch Perfect as Beca, a rebellious student who learns that she has a voice in her school's female a cappella group, and she is also featured on the film's soundtrack. Kendrick was also in the police drama End of Watch, as Janet. In 2012 she appeared in the political thriller The Company You Keep.
In 2013, Anna scored a hit song with "Cups (When I'm Gone)" from the film Pitch Perfect which became a No. 2 hit on Billboard's Adult Pop chart. Kendrick also hosted SNL on April 5, 2014 with musical guest Pharrell.
