Kendrick began her career at the age of 10 when she took a bus from her hometown to New York City so that she could try out for roles. Kendrick's first acting role was as Dinah in the Broadway musical High Society in the summer of 1998 when she was 12 years old, a role for which she was awarded the Theatre World Award. Also, she was nominated for a Drama Desk Award and Tony Award. The Tony Award nomination made her the third-youngest Tony Award nominee ever. Kendrick went on to appear in a number of other productions, including A Little Night Music, playing Fredrika Armfeldt in the New York City Opera production. A little later, she made her motion picture debut in the 2003 comedy musical Camp. For her portrayal of Fritzi Wagner in this film, she was nominated for the Independent Spirit Awards Best Debut Performance.

In 2007, Anna had a role in the film Rocket Science, in which she played Ginny Ryerson, a fast-talking high school debater. Later that year, she auditioned for the role of Jessica Stanley in the movie Twilight, a 2008 film based on the first book of the novel series by Stephenie Meyer. Anna had intended to do a mix-and-match audition with various actors, but she was too sick and had to leave. Fortunately for her, she was brought in for a later session where she was given the role of Jessica. Kendrick reprised this role in the first three Twilight sequels.

Anna's singing experience in theater won her the chance to star in The Marc Pease Experience (2009), where she appears as a high school senior involved in musical theater. She also appeared in the 2009 film Elsewhere, in which she plays her first lead character, a girl whose best friend goes missing. She also appeared in Up in the Air, based on Walter Kirn's 2001 novel of the same name. For her performance in Up in the Air, the National Board of Review named her Best Supporting Actress, and she also garnered nominations from numerous other awards including The Screen Actors Guild, The Golden Globes, and the Academy Awards.

She reprised her performance as Jessica Stanley in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.
