Anna began her career at the age of 10 when she took a bus from Portland, Maine, to New York City so that she could try out for roles. Her first acting role was as Dinah in the Broadway production High Society in the summer of 1998 when she was only 12 years old, a performance for which she was awarded the Theatre World Award. She was also nominated for a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award. The Tony Award nomination made her the third-youngest Tony Award nominee ever. Anna went on to appear in a number of other stage productions, including the musical A Little Night Music, in which she played Fredrika Armfeldt in the New York City Opera production. A little later, she made her film debut in the 2003 comedy musical Camp. For her portrayal of Fritzi Wagner in this film, she was nominated for the Independent Spirit Awards Best Debut Performance.

In 2007, Anna had a role in the film Rocket Science, in which she played Ginny Ryerson, a fast-talking high school debater. Later that year, she tried out for the part of Jessica Stanley in Twilight, a 2008 film based on the first book of the series by Stephenie Meyer. Anna had intended to do auditions with various actors, but she was too ill and had to leave. Fortunately for her, she was brought in for a later session where she won the role of Jessica.
