Anna started her performing career at the age of 10 when she caught a bus from Portland, Maine, to New York City where she could try out for roles. Kendrick's initial acting role was as Dinah in the Broadway musical High Society in the summer of 1998 when she was 12 years old, a performance for which she won the Theatre World Award. Also, she was nominated for a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award. The Tony Award nomination made her the third-youngest Tony Award nominee ever. Kendrick went on to appear in a number of other stage productions, including A Little Night Music, playing Fredrika Armfeldt in the New York City Opera production. Afterwards, she made her film debut in the 2003 musical comedy Camp. In 2007, Anna had a role in the film Rocket Science, in which she portrayed Ginny Ryerson, a high school debater that talked fast. Later that year, she tried out for the part of Jessica Stanley in the movie Twilight, a 2008 film based on the initial book of the series by Stephenie Meyer. She had intended to do a mix-and-match audition with various actors, but she was too ill and had to leave prematurely. Fortunately for her, she was brought in for a later session where she won the role of Jessica. Kendrick reprised this role in the first three Twilight sequels.

Anna's theater singing experience won her the chance to star in The Marc Pease Experience (2009), where she appears as a high school senior involved in musical theater.
