Anna Kendrick started her existence on August 9, 1985. She is an American actress and singer. She rose to international fame due to her performance as Natalie Keener in Up in the Air (2009), for which she was nominated for the Academy Awards, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Supporting Actress. She played Dinah Lord in the Broadway musical High Society (1998), for which she was up for a Tony Award. Other notable roles include Fritzi Wagner in Camp (2003), Jessica Stanley in The Twilight Saga (2008-11), Stacey Pilgrim in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), Beca Mitchell in Pitch Perfect (2012), and Janet in End of Watch (2012).
She was born in Portland, Maine, the daughter of Janice and William K. Kendrick. She is of English, Irish, and Scottish descent. Her older brother is actor Michael Cooke Kendrick, who appeared in the 2000 movie Looking for an Echo. Anna attended Deering High School in Portland.
Anna began her performing career at the early age of 10 when she caught a bus from her hometown to New York City so that she could try out for roles. Her initial role was as Dinah in the Broadway production High Society in August 1998 when she was 12 years old, a role for which she won the Theatre World Award. Also, she was nominated for a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award. The Tony Award nomination made her the third-youngest Tony Award nominee ever. Kendrick went on to perform in a number of other productions, including the musical A Little Night Music, in which she played Fredrika Armfeldt in the New York City Opera production. A little later, she made her film debut in the 2003 musical comedy Camp. For her portrayal of Fritzi Wagner in this film, she received a nomination for the Independent Spirit Awards Best Debut Performance.
In 2007, Anna had a role in the film Rocket Science, in which she played Ginny Ryerson, a high school debater that talked fast. Although Kendrick said she found the role challenging and intimidating after watching a real national collegiate debate, her performance was praised by critics and she was nominated for an Independent Spirit award for Best Supporting Actress. Later that year, Anna tried out for the role of Jessica Stanley in the film adaptation of Twilight, a 2008 film based on the initial book of the novel series by Stephenie Meyer. She had intended to do auditions with various actors, but was too sick and had to leave. Fortunately for her, she was brought in for a later session and won the role of Jessica. Kendrick reprised this role in the first three Twilight sequels.
Kendrick's singing experience in theater gave her the chance to land a role in The Marc Pease Experience (2009), where she appears as a high school senior involved in musical theater. She also appeared in the 2009 film Elsewhere, in which she plays her first lead character, a girl whose best friend goes missing. She also starred in Up in the Air, based on Walter Kirn's 2001 novel of the same name. For her performance in Up in the Air, the National Board of Review named her Best Supporting Actress, and she also garnered nominations from numerous other awards including The Golden Globes, The Screen Actors Guild, and the Academy Awards.
Kendrick reprised her role as Jessica Stanley in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. She appeared in Edgar Wright's adaptation of the graphic novel Scott Pilgrim, the name of the movie being Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Kendrick played Stacey Pilgrim, the sister of the lead character. In 2010, she appeared in LCD Soundsystem's video "Pow Pow" as a "shape-shifter" who collects "the souls of wicked men". In October 2010, she was at the 2010 Top Glamour Awards based in Mexico where she won the award for "Best International Actress".
In 2011, she starred in the dramatic comedy 50/50, and reprised her her portrayal of Jessica Stanley in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. In 2012, she played Rosie in the screen adaptation of the baby guide What to Expect When You're Expecting. She also lent her voice to the character Courtney in the animated movie ParaNorman. She starred in Pitch Perfect as Beca, a rebellious college student who learns that she has a voice in her school's all-women a cappella group, and she is also featured on the film's soundtrack. Kendrick also appeared in the police drama End of Watch, portraying Janet. In 2012 she was in the thriller The Company You Keep.
In 2013, Anna scored a hit song with "Cups (When I'm Gone)" from the film Pitch Perfect which became a No. 2 hit on Billboard's Adult Pop Song chart. Kendrick also hosted SNL on April 5, 2014 with musical guest Pharrell.
